RheinCargo joins the DLR INNOspace Weekend startup event
RheinCargo supports interdisciplinary activities between the space and logistics sectors through its participation as logistics content partner for the DLR INNOspace Weekend.
Cologne, 24 August 2017 – Today, logistics service provider, RheinCargo has confirmed its support as a content partner for the INNOspace Weekend. RheinCargo is Germany’s leading private rail freight operator and operates the second largest inland port in Europe. Participants will learn how it connects the Rhineland with the markets of the world through its Europe-wide network, combining the latest in innovative transport concepts in port and rail logistics.
The objective of the INNOspace Weekend is the development of new business ideas, integrating design thinking and other processes to enable creative innovation across the focus sectors – automotive, logistics and space. We look forward to the business ideas generated by the participants across these industries.
Participants will get a close insight into the current developments and future trends of port and rail logistics with RheinCargo. They will have the opportunity to visit its handling facilities in Köln-Niehl where RheinCargo supplies industry and retail with a mix of containers, bulk goods and general cargo.
Port Logistics in Cologne
RheinCargo operates one of the largest inland ports in Europe. At its seven locations along the Rhine River in Neuss, Düsseldorf and Cologne, it links port and rail logistics at one source.
It has customised solutions for almost any type of goods – from containers to agricultural products, building materials, coal and ores, iron and steel, chemical products and automotive vehicles. In total it handles around 27 million tonnes per year – about 1.3 million standard container units. This makes RheinCargo one of the most significant inland ports in Europe.

About the INNOspace Weekend
The INNOspace Weekend provides a platform for developing innovative applications and start-up concepts in the space, automotive and logistics sectors. DLR Space Administration facilitates access to expertise and to corporate networks in the space sector and in cooperating sectors. These networks should also make it easier to establish contacts with promotional and financing options to take those ideas to the next level.
About the INNOspace Initiative
The Space Administration division of the German Aerospace Center (DLR: Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) launched the INNOspace® initiative in 2013.
INNOspace® is an initiative that forms part of the National Programme for Space and Innovation run by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). Since 2014, it has been part of the new high-tech strategy of the German government and it comprises the following instruments:
- Multi-disciplinary symposia to initiate cooperation projects
- Expert and user workshops on ‘New Markets’ and networking sessions
- Financial support for innovation and transfer projects through funding from Germany’s National Programme [Nationales Programm].
